No matter how careful you are, accidents happen all the time. But having an auto insurance policy will protect you from financial ruin. Depending on the extent of the damage, filing an insurance claim will help you recover your losses.

In auto insurance policies, the policyholder is the one who should make the claim. When you file a claim, you are notifying the insurance company that you have suffered a loss or damage. It’s a formal request to receive assistance and compensation for repairs and other expenses.

As a policyholder, it pays to be informed of what you need to do when you get into an accident and know how to file an insurance claim. These five easy steps will help you achieve an efficient and successful claims experience.

Step 1: Call the Police

If you’re involved in an accident or theft, the first thing you need to do is call the police. The authorities know what the best course of action is, especially if anyone is injured. They will secure the accident scene and call for medical assistance.

While waiting for the authorities, always stay calm and protect your belongings. You may also turn on your hazard lights and set up warning flares or reflective triangles.

Once they arrive, tell them what happened exactly. Don’t forget to request a police report, which can speed up the insurance claims process.

Step 2: Gather Information

Aside from acquiring a police report, you also need to document everything for easier and faster claims. Take photos of the damage to your car and the other vehicles involved. You should also take pictures of the license plates and the driver’s insurance ID cards. If someone is hurt and needs medical attention, keep a copy of the physician's reports and medical bills.

Filing an insurance claim is easier if you’ve gathered enough information at the accident scene. Here’s a list of what your insurance company will ask from you:

  • Name, address, and phone number of people involved
  • Insurance policy numbers
  • License plate numbers
  • Make and model of all the vehicles involved
  • Photos of the accident from all sides and angles
  • Photos of the road conditions

Step 3: Contact Your Auto Insurance Company

When you have all the necessary documents in hand, it’s time to notify your insurance provider. Don’t waste any time in submitting the claim. The sooner you report the incident, the sooner your provider can start processing it. Deadlines for filing a claim may vary depending on your policy and ZIP code. Just to be safe, you should file your claim as soon as possible. Always communicate with your insurance agent as they know the ins and outs of the claims process.

Step 4: File Your Auto Insurance Claim

After calling your insurance provider, fill out their claims form and submit the necessary documents. Most insurance companies allow you to conveniently file a claim online, over the phone, or through an app.

During the process, you’ll be asked where and when the incident took place. Other information needed is the contact details of everyone involved.

In addition, you might need to work with a claims adjuster. They will inspect your vehicle, analyze police reports, and determine the claim settlement. When working with an adjuster, don’t be afraid to ask questions and clarifications.

Step 5: Receive the Claim Settlement

If your claim gets approved, you’ll receive your claim settlement offer. The insurance provider will either reimburse the repair costs or take your vehicle to a preferred body shop. The claims adjuster decides how much the insurance company should pay for the damage.

In case you’re not satisfied with the offer, you have the option to negotiate. Be sure to include any documentation that backs up your claims. This negotiation may result in a fair settlement amount.

The timeframe for claim settlement is not constant. This varies depending on various factors. If everything goes well without a problem, the claims can be resolved within weeks.
